HI, I’M RICH MILLER AT VIRTUA, WE BELIEVE CITIZENS NEED TO BE INFORMED ABOUT THE IMPORTANT HEALTHCARE ISSUES AFFECTING THEIR LIVES. THAT’S WHY WE’RE PROUD TO SUPPORT HEALTHCARE PROGRAMMING PRODUCED BY THE CAUCUS EDUCATIONAL CORPORATION, AND THEIR PARTNERS IN PUBLIC TELEVISION>>FUNDING FOR THIS EDITION OF ONE ON ONE WITH STEVE ADUBATO HAS BEEN PROVIDED BY THE RUSSELL BERRIE FOUNDATION VIRTUA THE NORTH WARD CENTER ADLER APHASIA CENTER HELPING STROKE AND BRAIN INJURY SURVIVORS RECOVER THEIR SPEECH THE LAW FIRM OF GIBBONS PC WELLS FARGO AND BY VERIZON PROMOTIONAL SUPPORT PROVIDED BY MEADOWLANDS REGIONAL CHAMBER BUILDING ESSENTIAL CONNECTIONS THAT DRIVE BUSINESS GROWTH AND BY OBSERVER NEW JERSEY POLITICS>>THIS IS ONE ON ONE>>I’M AN EQUAL AMERICAN JUST LIKE YOU ARE>>HMM>>THE JOBS OF TOMORROW ARE NOT THE JOBS OF YESTERDAY>>LOOK AT THIS, YOU GOT THIS?>>THERE IT IS MAN. LOOK AT THAT>>LIFE WITHOUT DANCE IS BORING [LAUGHTER]>>WHEN YOU FIRST HEARD THAT THEY WERE DOING CHARLIE ROSE AND GAYLE KING, DIDN’T YOU GO “WHAT?”>>DO YOU ENJOY TALKING POLITICS?>>NO>>PEOPLE CALL ME, CAUSE THEY FEEL NOBODY’S PAYING ATTENTION>>OUR CULTURE, I DON’T THINK HAS EVER BEEN TESTED IN THE WAY IT’S BEING TESTED RIGHT NOW>>THAT’S A GOOD QUESTION! HIGH FIVE! [MUSIC PLAYING] [MUSIC PLAYING] CLOSED CAPTIONING PROVIDED BY – – – -=ACIEM STUDIOS=- – – – – – -WWW.ACIEMSTUDIOS.COM- – ->>WE ARE PLEASED TO BE JOINED BY ANDREW GEORGE, STATEHOUSE CORRESPONDENT, NJBIZ. ONE OF THE FINEST PUBLICATIONS AROUND. PARTICULARLY IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE BUSINESS WORLD. BUT YOU WRITE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT POLITICS, DO YOU NOT?>>THAT’S RIGHT. THAT’S RIGHT. BASED IN THE STATE HOUSE.>>RIGHT. SO LET ME ASK YOU THIS. STATEHOUSE, RIGHT? IT USED TO BE STATEHOUSE ROW?>>RIGHT.>>IF YOU WILL. WHAT DOES THE ROW LOOK LIKE THESE DAYS?>>IT’S DWINDLING.>>[LAUGHTER]>>IT’S DWINDLING.>>IT’S DWINDLING? DESCRIBE THAT FOR US. THE MEDIA LANDSCAPE IN THE STATE HOUSE, HOW IT’S CHANGED? A, AND B, LOADED QUESTION, I KNOW ANDREW.>>YEAH.>>HOW IT’S CHANGED THE COVERAGE OF WHAT GOES ON IN THE STATE HOUSE?>>WELL, IN THE… LET’S SEE. I’VE BEEN THERE A LITTLE UNDER FOUR YEARS, AND JUST IN THAT SMALL SAMPLE SIZE, YOU KNOW, YOU’VE SEEN SOME BUREAUS GET SMALLER. DESKS GO AWAY. JUST THE OVERALL… THERE’S MORE SEATS AT A GOVERNOR CHRISTIE PRESS CONFERENCE THESE DAYS. THAT’S NOT A GOOD THING.>>WHY NOT?>>BECAUSE IF WE’RE THE ONES THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO, YOU KNOW, HOLD OUR OFFICIALS TO THE FIRE, AND HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE, WHERE ARE WE? AND SO YOU LOOK AT SOME OF OUR PUBLICATIONS, AND ACROSS THE STATE, AND WHERE THEY’RE PUTTING THEIR RESOURCES INTO. AND PARTICULARLY COMING OFF OF A REALLY HECTIC NATIONAL ELECTION CYCLE, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE A LOT OF RESOURCES BEING DIVERTED ELSEWHERE, RATHER THAN HERE IN THE STATE. AND EVEN TAKING A STEP OUTSIDE OF TRENTON FOR, YOU KNOW… I STARTED AS A MUNICIPAL REPORTER, AND THAT’S WHERE… THAT’S WHERE THERE’S A LOT OF NEWS TO BE HAD, RIGHT? MUNICIPAL BOARDS.>>ON A LOCAL LEVEL?>>SCHOOL BOARDS, TOWN HALL MEETINGS, THINGS LIKE THAT. WHERE, YOU KNOW… AND EVEN AT THE STATE LEVEL, FINANCIAL BOARDS AND DIFFERENT GOVERNMENT REGULATORY BODIES, AND WE’RE NOT, YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES THERE’S ONE OR TWO OR NOT EVEN ANY FOLKS IN THE ROOM. AND THAT’S WHERE… THAT’S WHERE I’M MOST WORRIED ABOUT OUR RESOURCES.>>ANDREW, LET ME ASK YOU THIS. WHAT…? DEVIL’S ADVOCATE.>>YEAH.>>WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IF I SAID “YOU KNOW, MOST PEOPLE DECIDE WHAT THEY WANT TO CHECK OUT IN TERMS OF MEDIA SOURCES.” SO THEY GO TO MEDIA ORGANIZATIONS, AND MEDIA PLATFORMS, THAT OFTEN REINFORCE WHAT THEY BELIEVE. ALRIGHT? SO THEY GO… IF THEY’RE CONSERVATIVE LEANING, THEY’LL GO TO FOX. IF THEY’RE MORE PROGRESSIVE, LIBERAL, IT’S… WHETHER IT’S CNN OR MSNBC ON THE TV SIDE, THEY’LL GO TO WEBSITES, BREITBART ON ONE SIDE, AND GOD KNOWS WHEREVER ON THE… YOU KNOW. I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT WOULD BE… HELP ME ON THIS TEAM. WHETHER IT’S POLITICAL OR WHEREVER ELSE.>>SURE.>>I DON’T WANT TO S… POLITICAL. OKAY, WHATEVER IT IS. BUT IT REINFORCES WHAT THEY ALREADY BELIEVE.>>RIGHT.>>WHAT’S WRONG WITH THAT?>>WELL, I THINK IF THE TIMES AND THE JOURNAL ARE SITTING AT THE TABLE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY THAT’S AN ISSUE THAT’S A VALID QUESTION TO HAVE. BUT WHEN WE’RE TALKING ABOUT THE STATE HOUSE MEDIA, WE’RE TALKING ABOUT NEW JERSEY NEWSPAPERS, AND NEW JERSEY MEDIA ENTITIES. LET’S… ALL POLITICS IS LOCAL. I KNOW THAT’S…>>IS THAT TRUE?>>I DO BELIEVE SO. BECAUSE IF YOU GO TO, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF TIMES YOU’LL HAVE A BIG PAPER TAKE UP A SMALL TOWN ISSUE. AND WHAT HAPPENS? MAYBE THAT ISSUE THAT WASN’T, YOU KNOW… THERE WAS NO ONE GOING TO A SCHOOL BOARD MEETING. THAT NEXT NIGHT, THERE’S NOT GONNA BE SEATING THERE. THESE THINGS CATCH FIRE AND FOLKS ARE CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT’S GOING ON IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES.>>SO THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN A DECISION’S MADE AT THE LOCAL LEVEL, AND ALL OF A SUDDEN MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ARE BEING SPENT, OR NOT BEING SPENT, TO DO SOMETHING. AN ENVIRONMENTAL DECISION HAS BEEN MADE, AND YOU GO “HEY! WHAT HAPPENED?”>>RIGHT>>WHAT HAPPENED?>>THAT’S WHY WE NEED TO BE THERE>>BUT HERE’S THE THING WHERE’S THE HUE AND CRY FROM LOCAL CITIZENS SAYING “I WANT MORE LOCAL COVERAGE!” “WHERE’S MY LOCAL NEWSPAPER?” IS IT A CATCH-22 KIND OF THING?>>TOTALLY A CATCH-22 AND I, YOU KNOW, I DON’T YOU DON’T WANT, YOU NEVER WANT TO MALIGN YOUR READERS BUT A LOT OF TIMES WE SAY WANT TO EAT OUR VEGETABLES BUT ALL WE WANT IS CANDY RIGHT? AND WE SAY WE WANT MORE LOCAL NEWS, AND WE WANT OUR NEWSPAPERS TO BE IN OUR COMMUNITIES AND OUR, YOU KNOW WE WANT, YOU KNOW, OUR LOCAL OFFICIALS TO BE HELD TO THE FIRE, WE CAN’T IF, YOU KNOW WE’RE CLICKING ON THINGS THAT ARE NOT THAT IMPORTANT TO US>>ALRIGHT. 2017 NEW JERSEY>>YEAH>>POST CHRIS CHRISTIE THERE’S GONNA BE A GOVERNOR’S RACE, WE’RE DOING THIS PROGRAM IN… AS, IN… IN… HOPEFULLY WE’RE GOING INTO THE SPRING SOON, THE WEATHER WILL GET WARMER IN 2017 WE DON’T KNOW WHO THE CANDIDATES ARE GONNA BE AND THIS PROGRAM MAY ALSO BE SEEN AFTER THE PRIMARIES BUT HERE’S THE THING POST CHRIS CHRISTIE>>YEAH>>WHAT DO YOU THINK THAT ELECTION WILL BE LIKE? AND WHAT WILL IT BE FOUGHT OVER? WHAT KINDS OF ISSUES?>>WELL, WHAT GOVERNOR CHRISTIE HAS DONE IN A LOT OF HIS BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS OF, YOU KNOW POLICY ANNOUNCEMENTS AS WELL AS BILL SIGNINGS, AND SOMETIMES IT DRAWS A SMIRK FROM ONE OR TWO OF US, IS THAT HE SAYS, YOU KNOW, “I’M TAKING CARE OF THIS NOW, SO THAT THE NEXT GOVERNOR DOESN’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT” AND IN THE CASE OF A 300,000,000 DOLLAR STATE HOUSE RENOVATION, THERE’S A LOT OF EYE ROLLING. BUT IN THE CASE OF SOMETHING LIKE TRANSPORT…>>HOLD ON, WOAH WOAH, BACK UP WHY EYE ROLLING ABOUT FIXING>>YEAH>>THE STATE HOUSE?>>AH, MAYBE THAT’S NOT THE TOP AGENDA ITEM OF SOME… OF AN INCOMING GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE>>THERE WAS SOME SKEPTICISM ABOUT THAT?>>A LITTLE BIT>>OKAY>>YES>>JUST CHECKING>>JUST CHECKING BUT…>>WHAT ABOUT… HOW ABOUT THE STUFF ABOUT OPIATE ADDICTION?>>VERY VALID ISSUE AND I THINK THAT IS SOME… I MEAN, HE’S ALREADY INDICATED IT’S A CLEAR INDICATOR THAT THAT’S GONNA BE HIS LEGACY ISSUE, AND THAT’S SOMETHING HE’S GONNA… HE’S GONNA WORK TOWARDS THE END AND FROM THE RESPONSE IT’S BEEN GETTING FROM EVERYDAY FOLKS I WOULD IMAGINE THAT’S SOMETHING THAT, I DON’T KNOW IF THE NEXT GOVERNOR’S GONNA TAKE UP AS STRONG, BUT IT WOULD BE SILLY TO JUST PUT IT TO THE SIDE>>SO LET’S TALK ABOUT ISSUES THAT REALLY DO MATTER>>YEAH>>HOW SERIOUS IS THE PENSION CRISIS IN THIS STATE FOR PUBLIC EMPLOYEES AND THE FACT THAT MORE AND MORE OF THEM ARE GONNA RETIRE WHEN THEY RETIRE THEIR PENSIONS HAVE TO BE PAID>>YEAH, YEAH>>IT’S, I DON’T KNOW 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 BILLION DOLLARS OF WHAT IS IT CALLED? WHAT? MONEY OWED?>>[LAUGHTER]>>IS THAT WHAT WE’RE GONNA CALL IT?>>I DON’T, I DON’T THINK THERE’S GONNA BE A BIGGER ISSUE COMING INTO 2017>>WHY? EXPLAIN THAT TO FOLKS WHO MAY NOT GET IT>>BECAUSE I WOULD, IF YOU ASKED ME THIS A YEAR AGO I WOULD HAVE TOLD YOU IT WAS THE TRANSPORTATION TRUST FUND OR…>>MONEY TO FIX ROADS AND BRIDGES?>>…INFRASTRUCTURE SPENDING AND THAT IS, FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, CURRENTLY PUT ASIDE, RIGHT? WE… THERE’S GONNA BE SOME DEBATE ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL AND THAT’S SOMETHING THAT I’M HEARING SOME CONCERN ABOUT AND WE CAN TALK MORE ABOUT THAT AS WELL, BUT I DO THINK THE PENSION ISSUE IS GONNA COME FRONT AND CENTER, BECAUSE THAT’S THE BIGGEST ISSUE THAT’S STILL LEFT WITHOUT HAVING BEEN GIVEN ATTENTION TO AT THIS POINT IT’S LEFT UNRESOLVED AND THERE ARE A LOT OF PENSIONERS IN THIS STATE AND A LOT OF PENSIONERS THAT VOTE SO IT’S DEFINITELY GONNA BE A>>HOW DO YOU GET PEOPLE TO CARE ABOUT IT? HOW DO YOU GET THE AVERAGE PERSON, NOT A PUBLIC EMPLOYEE, NOT SOMEONE WHO’S GONNA RETIRE, ANDREW, AND BE>>YEAH>>IN A POSITION TO RECEIVE THOSE PENSION BENEFITS OR NOT>>YEAH>>TO CARE ABOUT THIS?>>YOU GOTTA MAKE IT… YOU GOTTA, YOU GOTTA SHOWCASE HOW IF… EVEN IF YOU’RE NOT RECEIVING A PENSION MAYBE YOU’RE PUTTING YOUR MONEY INTO THAT SYSTEM I THINK, I THINK THAT’S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR A REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE TO MAKE HIS OR HER CASE ABOUT, YOU KNOW, WHY REAL REFORM IS NEEDED. YEAH>>YOU MEAN REFORMING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE STATE AND PUBLIC EMPLOYEES?>>REFORMING… YEAH, I WOULD SAY SO, I WOULD SAY AT THIS POINT…>>YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT CUTTING BENEFITS?>>NO, I…>>BECAUSE “REFORM” IS A FUNNY WORD>>I UNDERSTAND>>IT MEANS DIFFERENT THINGS TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE>>I UNDER… NO, I UNDERSTAND BUT WHEN YOU LOOK BACK AT SOME OF THE TOUGH TALK THE GOVERNOR HAS USED ON THIS ISSUE AND… THAT HASN’T BEEN ILL RECEIVED BY HIS SUPPORTERS IN A PRIMARY SEASON WHEN THESE DISCUSSIONS ARE RAMPED UP, AND EMOTIONS ARE HIGH, I CAN SEE A REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE KIND OF DOUBLING DOWN ON THOSE EFFORTS>>YOU COULD?>>I COULD>>AND PHIL MURPHY IN THIS? WE DON’T KNOW WHAT’S GONNA BE HAPPENING?>>NO>>YOU’RE SMILING AS I SAY IT>>YEAH>>BECAUSE?>>I WOULD IMAGINE ANY DEMOCRAT, WHETHER IT’S PHIL MURPHY OR NOT IS GOING TO LOOK TO BECOME THE CHAMPION OF THE PENSIONERS I MEAN THAT’S… THAT’S SOMETHING THAT I FULLY EXPECT>>THE MEDIA ENVIRONMENT BEFORE I LET YOU OUT OF HERE>>YEAH>>THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE MEDIA AND THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION?>>YEAH>>YOU SAY?>>I COVERED TRUMP ONCE WHEN HE WAS IN NEW JERSEY, AND IT WAS, YOU KNOW IT WAS TOUGH IT WAS… IT’S THE SAME EXPERIENCE THAT WE’VE SEEN YOU KNOW, ON NATIONAL BROADCAST WHERE, YOU KNOW, HE SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT THE MEDIA EVERYONE TURNS AROUND AND YELLS THEIR WORDS AT US AND THAT DOESN’T, YOU KNOW HURT US PERSONALLY PROFESSIONALLY IT’S CONCERNING GOING FORWARD NUMBER ONE, FOR THE FOLKS THAT DEAL WITH THAT ADMINISTRATION EVERYDAY, BUT THE TRICKLE DOWN EFFECT OF, YOU KNOW, HOW DOES THAT… HOW DOES THAT RELAY INTO THE STATE LEVEL? THERE’S A LOT OF DISTRUST IN THE MEDIA, THAT’S SOMETHING THAT IS, WHETHER VALID OR NOT IT’S EVIDENT>>LAST QUESTION>>YEAH>>FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW NJBIZ>>YEAH>>AND WE HAVE A PROMOTIONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH NJBIZ WHAT IS THE PUBLICATION?>>WE’RE A BUSINESS JOURNAL A STATEWIDE BUSINESS JOURNAL WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR THE INTERSECTION BETWEEN POLITICS AND BUSINESS AND YOU KNOW, WHETHER YOU’RE A BUSINESSMAN, OR A BUSINESSMAN A BUSINESSWOMAN OR NOT EVERYTHING DOES END UP RELATING BACK TO BUSINESS>>AND ALSO CHECK YOU OUT ONLINE NJBIZ.COM>>THAT’S RIGHT>>ANDREW GEORGE, STATEHOUSE>>THAT’S RIGHT>>CORRESPONDENT, IT MAY BE DWINDLING, BUT THERE WILL BE STATEHOUSE ROW, IF YOU WILL BUT IT’S STILL IMPORTANT WORK GOING ON AT NJBIZ THANK YOU ANDREW, APPRECIATE IT>>THANK YOU STEVE>>BUDDY, STAY RIGHT THERE WE’LL BE RIGHT BACK RIGHT AFTER THIS>>TO SEE MORE ONE ON ONE WITH STEVE ADUBATO PROGRAMS, VISIT US ONLINE AT WWW.STEVEADUBATO.ORG IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO EXPRESS AN OPINION, EMAIL US AT [email protected] FIND US ON FACEBOOK AT FACEBOOK.COM/STEVEADUBATOPHD AND FOLLOW US ON TWITTER AT @STEVEADUBATO>>WE ARE SPEAKING WITH PATRICIA CONSTANTE, WHO IS THE CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF MDADVANTAGE INSURANCE COMPANY OF NEW JERSEY. PATRICIA, WE’RE TALKING ABOUT MEDICAL EDUCATION. A VERY STRONG COMMITMENT THAT YOUR COMPANY HAS, AND THE EJI AWARDS, WHICH STANDS FOR?>>EDWARD J. ILL AWARDS. AND DOCTOR ILL WAS A PHYSICIAN WHO PRACTICED IN THE EARLY 1900’S, AND HAD A COMMITMENT TO CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR PHYSICIANS. AND THAT’S REALLY THE LEGACY OF THESE AWARDS.>>YOU KNOW, I FULLY DISCLOSE CERTAIN THINGS, AND ONE OF THE THINGS I WILL PROUDLY DISCLOSE IS THAT I HAVE BEEN HONORED, FOR MANY YEARS, TO COHOST THESE AWARDS FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION. THE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THESE MEDICAL STUDENTS, TOGETHER WITH YOU, AT THIS GREAT EVENT. AND A WHOLE RANGE OF PEOPLE ARE HONORED IN THE MEDICAL PROFESSION THAT NIGHT. TALK ABOUT MEDICAL EDUCATION. HOW IT’S EVOLVING, AND WHAT THESE MEDICAL STUDENTS ARE DEALING WITH, AND WHY THESE SCHOLARSHIPS MATTER SO MUCH?>>THE SCHOLARSHIPS MATTER PRIMARILY BECAUSE THE DEBT THAT STUDENTS INCUR AS THEY GO THROUGH MEDICAL SCHOOL IS REALLY PRETTY MIND BOGGLING WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT. 80 PERCENT OF STUDENTS WHO GRADUATE, GRADUATE WITH MORE THAN 100,000 DOLLARS IN DEBT. BUT MORE THAN THAT, THERE ARE 12 PERCENT OF STUDENTS WHO FINISH MEDICAL SCHOOL OWING MORE THAN 300,000 DOLLARS. AND IT COLORS EVERY DECISION THEY MAKE. WHAT SPECIALTY CAN I GO INTO? WHAT KIND OF LIFESTYLE CAN I EXPECT IF I HAVE TO PICK UP EXTRA SHIFTS IN AN EMERGENCY ROOM? AS AN EXAMPLE. SO REALLY, WHAT WE’RE TRYING TO DO, IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE OPPORTUNITY FOR SOME FINANCIAL RELIEF, IN HOPES THAT THEY CAN THINK MORE ABOUT PRIMARY CARE SPECIALTIES, WHICH IS AN AREA WHERE THE COUNTRY, BUT NEW JERSEY SPECIFICALLY, SEES A REAL LACK. A REAL LACK IN PRIMARY CARE MEDICINE, BECAUSE THE REIMBURSEMENT IS LESS FAVORABLE.>>LET’S TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT. THIS WHOLE PRIMARY CARE, WHETHER… IS IT…? “SHORTAGE” THE RIGHT WORD BY THE WAY?>>I THINK “SHORTAGE” IS EXACTLY THE RIGHT WORD.>>AND HOW DOES THAT PLAY OUT FOR CONSUMERS…? NOT CONSUMERS. FOR PATIENTS?>>WELL, IT PLAYS OUT IN THE FACT THAT, HAVE YOU EVER HAD AN EARACHE AND TRIED TO GET AN APPOINTMENT WITH A PRIMARY CARE DOCTOR? YOU CAN FACE, YOU KNOW, A TWO WEEK WAIT FOR AN APPOINTMENT. I THINK IT’S PART OF WHAT HAS PROMPTED THE RISE OF URGENT CARE CENTERS. AND, YOU KNOW, WHAT’S REFERRED TO AS “CVS MEDICINE” WHICH IS STAFFED PRIMARILY BY NURSE PRACTITIONERS, AND PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS. BECAUSE PHYSICIANS PRIMARILY ARE MOVING AWAY FROM PRIMARY CARE INTO THE SPECIALTIES. AND THAT’S AN AREA THAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE PHYSICIANS ENTER, BECAUSE THEY REALLY NEED TO BE THE CAPTAINS OF WHAT’S BECOMING MORE AND MORE TEAM BASED CARE.>>PATRICIA, AS WE LOOK AT THE HEALTHCARE LANDSCAPE FROM A BIGGER PICTURE PERSPECTIVE, WE DON’T KNOW WHAT’S GONNA HAPPEN WITH THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT. NO ONE REALLY DOES. BUT AS YOU BRING IT BACK HOME, TO WHAT DEGREE DO YOU FEEL A RESPONSIBILITY TO BE INVOLVED IN THIS INITIATIVE REGARDING MEDICAL EDUCATION, ACKNOWLEDGING MEDICAL EXCELLENCE, IF YOU WILL, WITH THE EDWARD J. ILL AWARDS? THE POINT IS THIS. WHILE EVERYTHING ELSE IS SWIRLING AROUND YOU IN WASHINGTON AND OTHER PLACES, THESE DECISIONS, HOW MUCH DOES IT MATTER TO TRY TO DO WHAT YOU CAN DO EVERYDAY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?>>I THINK IT MATTERS TREMENDOUSLY, REGARDLESS OF WHAT HAPPENS IN ANY POLITICAL OR POLICY ARENA. THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO NEED CARE NEW JERSEY HAS AN AGING POPULATION, MORE OF AN AGINIG POPULATION THAN OTHER STATES THE CARE NEEDS ARE ENORMOUS AND THE NEED TO HAVE PHYSICIANS AND OTHER HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS TO CARE FOR THOSE NEEDS WON’T CHANGE REGARDLESS OF THE DECISIONS THAT ARE MADE. AND SO TO THE EXTENT THAT WE CAN HIGHLIGHT MEDICAL EXCELLENCE USE THAT AS A WAY TO RAISE FUNDS FOR SCHOLARSHIPS AT LEAST WE CAN SAY WE DID SOMETHING>>BY THE WAY, I’M SORRY FOR INTERRUPTING PATRICIA LET’S ACTUALLY IDENTIFY EVEN IF WE DON’T IDENTIFY ALL THE AREAS WE IDENTIFY MEDICAL EXCELLENCE IN CERTAIN AREAS LET’S NAME SOME OF THEM>>WE IDENTIFY MEDICAL EXCELLENCE IN TERMS OF A PHYSICIAN’S AWARD WHICH HAS TO DO TO WITH PHYSICIAN CARE FOR PATIENTS WE RECOGNIZE HEALTHCARE LEADERS, FOR EXAMPLE, HOSPITAL CEO’S IN THAT CATEGORY WE RECOGNIZE RESEARCH BOTH BASIC SCIENCE RESEARCH PHARMACEUTICAL TYPE RESEARCH IS WHAT WE’RE VERY INTERESTED IN, AS WELL AS A VARIETY OF WHAT I WOULD CALL ANCILLARY PROFESSIONALS WHO PROVIDE BOTH POLICYMAKING CHANGES THAT IMPACT HEALTHCARE AS WELL AS CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS, NOT FOR PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, THAT SERVE PATIENTS’ NEEDS>>AND WHAT I’M INTERESTED IN IS THIS, AND FOR THOSE WHO HAVE HARD TIME IMAGINING WHAT MEDICAL STUDENTS ARE GOING THROUGH, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT STRUCK ME OVER THE YEARS AFTER INTERVIEWING MANY OF THE STUDENTS WHO RECEIVE THESE SCHOLARSHIPS, WHO HAVE GONE ON AND SOME OF WHOM ARE ACTUALLY PRACTICING PHYSICIANS TODAY, WE TRY TO IMAGINE WHAT THEY’RE ACTUALLY GOING THROUGH WHILE THEY ARE IN MEDICAL SCHOOL? I MEAN, THOUGH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES, THE CHALLENGES THEY FACE ARE VERY REAL TALK ABOUT THAT>>SO I THINK THERE HAVE BEEN A LOT OF STUDIES THAT HAVE FOCUSED ON THE FACT THAT DEPRESSION AMONG MEDICAL STUDENTS IS MORE PREVALENT THAN I THINK WE WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE, AND THAT HAS TO DO WITH A VARIETY OF THINGS WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST STUDENTS IN COLLEGE THEY TEND TO THEN MOVE ONTO MEDICAL SCHOOL, AND SUDDENLY THEY’RE AMONG THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST FROM ALL THE OTHER SCHOOLS>>THAT’S PRESSURE?>>THAT’S PRESSURE, THAT’S INTENSE COMPETITIVE PRESSURE AND I BELIEVE THEY FEEL THAT RIGHT AWAY THEY HAVE A VERY COMPETITIVE COURSELOAD THAT THEY NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO AN INCREASED ATTENTION, EARLIER ON IN MEDICAL SCHOOL, TO PROVIDING PATIENT CARE AND I THINK THAT FIRST RECOGNITION OF EVERY DECISION I MAKE IS GOING TO MATTER TO THIS PATIENT, CAN BE QUITE OVERWHELMING AND ESPECIALLY IF THEY’RE PLACED IN A RESIDENCY SITUATION OR AN INTERNSHIP SITUATION WHERE THE SUPPORT THEY RECEIVE IS LESS THAN OPTIMAL SO I THINK YOU PUT ALL THOSE THINGS TOGETHER, AND WE REALLY HAVE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT IN MOST CASES, THESE ARE YOUNG PEOPLE, THESE ARE 22, 23 YEAR OLD YOUNG ADULTS WHO ARE FACED WITH AN ENORMOUS ARRAY OF LEARNING EXPERIENCES THAT ARE PROBABLY QUITE UNIQUE AT THAT POINT IN TIME>>AND THEN YOU ADD ON THE FINANCIAL CHALLENGES?>>ABSOLUTELY. AND I WOULD LIKE TO THINK THAT THEY’RE NOT SPENDING EVERY MINUTE THINKING ABOUT THOSE FINANCIAL CHALLENGES, BUT WE CERTAINLY HEAR SITUATIONS OF MEDICAL STUDENTS ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN GOING TO MEDICAL SCHOOL WHO ARE LIVING IN THEIR CAR BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE THE MONEY TO SUPPORT HOUSING SO I THINK THERE ARE THOSE EXTREME SITUATIONS THAT WE DON’T THINK ABOUT ON A ROUTINE BASIS BUT CERTAINLY IMPACT TO HELP PEOPLE MAKE DECISIONS AND THE PRESSURES THAT THEY FEEL AS THEY GO ABOUT THEIR DAY TO DAY LEARNING EXPERIENCES>>SO FINALLY, THE SCHOLARSHIPS MATTER A LOT?>>I THINK THEY MATTER TREMENDOUSLY, AND MY ONLY WISH IS THAT WE COULD MOVE FROM DOING SIX TO EIGHT TO TEN TO HUNDREDS OF THEM, AND AS THE SUCCESS OF THE ORGANIZATION AND THE EFFORTS OF THE EDWARD J. ILL FOUNDATION GROW, THAT’S CERTAINLY OUR INTENTION IS TO INCREASE THE SCHOLARSHIPS WE MAKE AVAILABLE>>THANK YOU PATRICIA>>THANK YOU STEVE>>TO SEE MORE ONE ON ONE WITH STEVE ADUBATO PROGRAMS, VISIT US ONLINE AT WWW.STEVEADUBATO.ORG IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO EXPRESS AN OPINION, EMAIL US AT [email protected] FIND US ON FACEBOOK AT FACEBOOK.COM/STEVEADUBATOPHD AND FOLLOW US ON TWITTER AT @STEVEADUBATO>>HI FOLKS, THIS IS STEVE ADUBATO. MORE IMPORTANTLY, WE’RE AT THE KASSER THEATER AT BEAUTIFUL MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY. THIS IS IN FACT THIS CROWD BEHIND US IS GATHERED FOR THE 2017 MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP DINNER. AND WE ARE HONORED TO BE SPEAKING WITH DR. SUSAN COLE, THE PRESIDENT OF MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY. DESCRIBE FOR FOLKS WATCHING US ON EVERY CONCEIVABLE PLATFORM WHY ALL THESE FOLKS HAVE GATHERED TONIGHT.>>THEY HAVE GATHERED TONIGHT TO HELP US RAISE THE MONEY THAT WE NEED FOR SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT IS REAL IN TODAY’S WORLD IS THAT EVEN IN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES, AND REMEMBER 75 PERCENT OF AMERICANS GO TO PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES, THE GOVERNMENT HAS SO ABANDONED SUPPORT THAT STUDENTS STRUGGLE TO PAY EVEN PUBLIC UNIVERSITY TUITIONS.>>LET’S TALK ABOUT THIS A LITTLE BIT. THIS NIGHT, AND BY THE WAY, TO DISCLOSE, I’VE BEEN HONORED, I’M A GRADUATE OF MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY, CLASS OF 1980. DO THE MATH. BUT THE OTHER THING IS THAT I’VE BEEN HONORED TO HOST THIS EVENT MANY, MANY YEARS, AND THE AMOUNT OF MONEY IS EXTRAORDINARY, BUT THE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THESE STUDENTS, IT CAN CHANGE THEIR LIVES, DOCTOR COLE? RIGHT?>>IT DOES CHANGE THEIR LIVES. WHAT IT REALLY MEANS IS THAT A STUDENT WHO IS STUDYING SCIENCE, WHO IS STUDYING CHEMISTRY, OR STUDYING PHYSICS, CAN ACTUALLY SPEND TIME WORKING IN THE LABORATORY AND STUDYING, INSTEAD OF TRYING TO WORK TWO JOBS AT THE MALL IN ORDER TO PAY THEIR TUITION, BUY THEIR COMPUTER, AND EAT THEIR FOOD. IT GIVES THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO REALIZE THEIR POTENTIAL.>>LET’S TRY THIS. THE OTHER QUESTION IS ABOUT LEADERSHIP. DR. COLE AND I HAVE A LOT OF CONVERSATIONS ABOUT LEADERSHIP. IF YOU WERE TO SAY WHAT THE NUMBER ONE LEADERSHIP LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNED AS THE PRESIDENT OF THIS INSTITUTION, THAT YOU WOULD WANT TO SHARE WITH THE STUDENTS AS WELL AS EVERYONE WATCHING RIGHT NOW, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?>>I THINK THE PRIMARY THING, I BELIEVE, ABOUT LEADERSHIP FROM YEARS OF HAVING BEEN A PRESIDENT IS THAT IT IS NEVER ABOUT YOURSELF. NEVER ABOUT YOURSELF. IT IS ALWAYS ABOUT THE MISSION. IF YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS YOU’RE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH, AND WHY YOU’RE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH IT, THEN WHAT YOU DO IS YOU CONVINCE OTHER PEOPLE THAT THIS IS AN IMPORTANT MISSION, AND THAT THEY HAVE SOMETHING TO CONTRIBUTE TO IT. YOU HAVE TO MAKE IT BELONG TO THE PEOPLE WHO ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO REALIZE THE GOAL.>>DR. COLE, LET’S TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE STATE OF HIGHER EDUCATION TODAY. YOU’VE BEEN WITH US MANY TIMES ON PUBLIC TELEVISION TALKING ABOUT THE CHALLENGES THAT, NOT JUST PROFESSIONALS LIKE YOURSELF, LEADERS IN HIGHER ED FACE, BUT STUDENTS AS WELL. THE STATE OF HIGHER ED IN NEW JERSEY. DESCRIBE IT.>>IT’S A LITTLE DISAPPOINTING. THE INSTITUTIONS ARE DOING REALLY WELL, AND WORKING REALLY HARD, TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS FOR INCREASING NUMBERS OF STUDENTS, BUT THE STATE HAS REALLY STEPPED BACK FROM THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE OPERATING SUPPORT FOR THE PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS. SO NOW THE STUDENTS ARE BUILDING THEIR OWN INSTITUTIONS, AND THAT IS PUTTING A TREMENDOUS BURDEN ON THEM, AND ON THEIR FAMILIES. AND IT DOES SEPARATE THEM FROM THE TIME THAT THEY NEED IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL AND TO FINISH THEIR DEGREES IN A TIMELY WAY>>ARE YOU ACTUALLY SAYING IT’S HARDER TO BE A STUDENT TODAY? IT’S HARDER TO DO WELL? TO FOCUS ON ONE’S STUDIES BECAUSE OF THE FINANCIAL PRESSURES?>>YES, THERE’S NO QUESTION ABOUT IT. THE STATE REALLY USED TO TAKE UP THE LION’S SHARE OF THE BURDEN OF SUPPORT NECESSARY FOR THESE INSTITUTIONS, WELL THEY DON’T DO THAT ANYMORE. LESS THAN 20 PERCENT OF THE OPERATING SUPPORT FOR MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY COMES FROM THE STATE WELL, WHERE DOES THE OTHER 80 PERCENT COME FROM? OBVIOUSLY THE BIGGEST SHARE OF IT IS FROM STUDENT TUITION AND FEES>>DOCTOR, TWO OF THE HONOREES TONIGHT ARE VERY STRONG LEADERS WHO HAPPEN TO BE WOMEN. RIGHT? DESCRIBE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP AND THE PEOPLE YOU’RE HONORING TONIGHT>>WELL, YOU KNOW, I DON’T LIKE TO GENERALIZE ABOUT GENDER BUT IF I HAD TO [LAUGHTER]>>[LAUGHTER]>>IF YOU FORCED ME TO>>NO ONE FORCES YOU TO DO ANYTHING, BUT GO AHEAD>>WELL IF YOU FORCED ME TO I WOULD SAY THAT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WOMEN REALLY DO WELL IS FOCUS ON MISSION AND LESS ON THEMSELVES AS I SAID EARLIER, I THINK THAT’S REALLY WHAT’S IMPORTANT AND THEY ARE ALSO MUCH MORE SENSITIVE, I THINK, MOST OF THE TIME, THIS NEVER IS UNIVERSAL, BUT MOST OF THE TIME, MORE SENSITIVE TO HEARING OTHER PEOPLE AND TALKING TO OTHER PEOPLE AND ENGAGING THEM WHERE THEY NEED TO BE MET, SO THEY CAN BE PART OF THE OVERALL ENTERPRISE IN A MORE PRODUCTIVE AND FULFILLING WAY>>LAST QUESTION ON LEADERSHIP I’M ACTUALLY GONNA BE COMING UP HERE TO DO A SEMINAR CALLED LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP NAMED AFTER A BOOK THAT I HAPPENED TO WRITE AND I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT DISCUSSION, DR. COLE WILL BE PART OF THAT DISCUSSION AS WELL, DO YOU BELIEVE THAT GREAT LEADERS ARE BORN OR TRAINED?>>I BELIEVE GREAT LEADERS ARE, IN FACT, BORN I THINK THAT IT IS SOMETHING IN YOU THAT CAUSES YOU TO WANT TO GO TO THE FRONT OF THE ROOM THE FRONT OF THE MARCH THAT THERE’S SOMETHING THAT IS NATURAL, CERTAINLY IN MYSELF THERE IS AND IN MANY OTHER PEOPLE HOWEVER, PEOPLE BECOME LEADERS NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE BORN TO BE, OR ARE INCLINED TO BE BUT BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO BE THAT IS, SOMETHING IS SO IMPORTANT TO THEM, THAT EVEN THOUGH THEY DON’T HAVE THAT NATURAL INCLINATION TO GO TO THE FRONT OF THE ROOM, THEY DO IT BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE IN SOMETHING>>BUT IT’S NOT FOR EVERYONE?>>IT ISN’T NO, IF EVERYONE WERE LEADING NOBODY WOULD BE FOLLOWING AND WE’D ALL BE GOING IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH, OR TO BE ASHAMED ABOUT BY BEING A FOLLOWER AS LONG AS YOU’RE FOLLOWING THE RIGHT LEADER, AND YOU’RE DOING IT FOR THE RIGHT REASONS>>THANK YOU DR. COLE>>MY PLEASURE AS ALWAYS AND BY THE WAY, YOUR BOOK’S ON MY DESK>>[LAUGHTER] I DON’T KNOW IF THAT’S A GOOD OR A BAD THING AND YOU’VE BEEN LEADING THIS PLACE FOR A LONG TIME AND I AM HONORED TO BE AN ALUMN AND I’M HONORED TO BE A PART OF A GREAT NIGHT RAISING MONEY FOR SOME TERRIFIC STUDENTS THANK YOU>>THANK YOU VERY MUCH>>ONE ON ONE WITH STEVE ADUBATO HAS BEEN A PRODUCTION OF THE CAUCUS EDUCATIONAL CORPORATION CELEBRATING OVER 25 YEARS OF BROADCAST EXCELLENCE FUNDING FOR THIS EDITION OF ONE ON ONE WITH STEVE ADUBATO HAS BEEN PROVIDED BY THE RUSSELL BERRIE FOUNDATION VIRTUA THE NORTH WARD CENTER ADLER APHASIA CENTER THE LAW FIRM OF GIBBONS PC WELLS FARGO AND BY VERIZON TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED BY AIR BROOK LIMOUSINE SERVING THE METROPOLITAN NEW YORK NEW JERSEY AREA>>PLANNING FOR RETIREMENT WHETHER YOU’RE ENTERING THE WORKFORCE, OR CLOSE TO RETIRING WELLS FARGO CAN OFFER YOU GUIDANCE AND RESOURCES TO HELP YOU PURSUE YOUR RETIREMENT GOALS PLANNING AT ANY AGE FROM BUILDING SAVINGS TO GENERATING INCOME IN RETIREMENT WELLS FARGO CAN PROVIDE THE TOOLS TO HELP YOU MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR RETIREMENT WELLS FARGO TOGETHER WE’LL GO FAR
